China has a good number of rivers, among which over 1, 500 covers a valley area of over 1,000 square kilometers. Most of them originate on the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau and have high drops from their riverhead to their estuary; therefore, China is abundant in waterpower resources with reserves of 680 million kilowatts, ranking first in the world. With a length of 6, 300 km, the Yangtze River is the longest river in China the third longest in the world, second only to the Nile in Africa and the Amazon in South America.

The upstream section of the Yangtze River flows through mountains and deep valleys, thus having rich waterpower resources. The river, serving as a water artery between the west and east of China, is known as the "gold waterway". Besides, thanks to the warm and humid climate, abundant rainfall and fertile land, the middle and lower reaches of the Yangtze River have become China's important agricultural region. The Huanghe River is the second longest river in China with a total length of 5, 464km.

With lush pastures, developed agriculture and rich mineral resources, its valley is one of the birthplaces of the ancient Chinese civilization. The Heilongjiang River, the longest river in northern China, has a total length of 4,350 km, with 3,101 km in the territory of China. The Pearl River, the longest one in southern China, has a total length of 2,214 km. In addition to natural rivers, China has a well-known artificial one——the Grand Canal, which runs from north to south. First constructed in the 5th century BC, it connects Beijing in the north with Hangzhou of Zhejiang in the south, linking the Haihe, the Huanghe, the Huaihe, the Yangtze and the Qiantang rivers. With a total length of 1, 801 km, it is the earliest and the longest canal in the world.
