Former Yemeni President Ali Abdullah Saleh has been killed amid fighting between his supporters and their former allies, the Houthi rebel movement.

Houthi-controlled al-Masirah TV cited Houthi officials as announcing the "end of the crisis of the treason militia and the killing of its leader".

Officials from Mr Saleh’s General People’s Congress party said he died in an attack south of the capital, Sanaa.

The Houthis’ leader hailed the news as a "great and significant occasion".

Pictures and video circulated online showed the body of a man resembling Mr Saleh with a severe head wound.

His political party earlier denied that he was dead after Houthi fighters blew up his house in the capital, Sanaa.

More than 8,670 people have been killed and 49,960 injured since a Saudi-led coalition backing Mr Hadi intervened in the conflict in 2015, according to the UN.
